The Birds Of Killingworth

Photo above is from the Connecticut State library and is a picture of the house across from the town compactor in Killingworth, CT

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote The Birds Of Killingworth http://www.hwlongfellow.org/poems_poem.php?pid=2047  while staying in Killingworth Connecticut many years ago. It is said that he stayed in the house across the street from the town trash compactor (the dump). I thought it would be fun to document the many birds living in Killingworth. I will be adding to this collection as time goes on. Feel free to send me any photos you may have and if you'd like I could add your name below any photo sent. My email is daystar1952@yahoo.com

An Exciting New Development!! The new owner of the Harriet Strain House across from the dump where Longfellow was said to have stayed and where he wrote the Birds of Killingworth, found a very exciting confirmation that Longfellow really did stay there! During renovation the owner uncovered writing on the old fireplace that says The Birds Of Killingworth!!!!!! Here is a photo. This is his blog which shows more photos

Some Confusion:  Today I spoke with some townspeople including a woman who is very historically literate. Evidently the official rumor concerning where Longfellow stayed when in Killingworth says that he stayed at the Ely House when he wrote the The Birds Of Killingworth, which is almost across from the Country Store. However, the old house across from the town dump also is claimed by some to be a house where Longfellow wrote The Birds of Killingworth. The two houses may not even be a quarter of a mile apart so perhaps he stayed in both of them. And now with this finding of the writing on the fireplace stone in the house across from the dump...well...the plot thickens! :>)
Turkeys were waiting for the Killingworth library to open on Thanksgiving Morning 2013. When I walked over to photograph them and told them the library wasn't open on Thanksgiving they decided to go home by crossing over Route 81.

I interrupted this vultures "road kill meal" as I was walking by. As you can see he posed very nicely for me. : >)

These Birds live in Killingworth too     at our house!

This bluebird was guarding his house from other birds at the Cranberry Bog on Pond Meadow Rd.

Not Sure what kind of bird this one is but several birds of this type were the culprits who were trying to take over the bluebird house. At least that's what it looked like :>) These birds were dive bombers!

Then of course we have the robin......a welcome sign of spring!

This turkey was stuck on the inside of our fenced in chicken yard but finally flew out

  1. We have recently purchased a house directly across from the recycling center. This house needs much restoration. We have recently exposed a stone lintel in one of the fireplaces with the words "Birds of Killingworth" written across it. Are there any other citing placing Longfellow in this house? Any info appreciated. We have a blog about our progress: djgschueler.blogspot.com

  2. Oh...that's so interesting. I was wondering who moved into that house. My mother's friend, Harriet Strain, lived there. I would suggest that you contact the Killingworth Historical Society for more possible evidence. I will visit your blog right now. Thankyou for posting!
